My dad was visiting for Easter last week. During the visit he asked if I had heard of a restaurant called Sugar n’ Spice in Paddock Hills. He had read about it somewhere and added it to his list of Cincinnati Still-To-Do items. Having gone to Xavier University, I had definitely heard of the hidden gem near campus, but did not really discover it until I later worked off of nearby Towne Street in the same Bond Hill area.
Sugar n’ Spice was a workplace favorite for brunch and lunch. I did remember one key thing – do not go with a large crowd unless you want to wait forever. Sugar n’ Spice is a quaint diner with limited seating. But well worth fighting the crowds. So when the kids went back to school after spring break, I drove my dad down for brunch. We arrived around 10:00 and there was no wait for us to sit together at the counter. Another couple wanted a booth and probably waited about 10 minutes. Also to note – Sugar n’ Spice will not seat you until your entire party is present. The inside of the restaurant is very bright and colorful with fun murals on the wall and rubber ducks lined up on shelving. The restaurant sign said it had a maximum of around 50 occupants, but even with 30 in the diner on the morning we were there, it seemed lively with only a few open spots left at the counter. Booth conversations can be more private and intimate, but expect a counter conversation to include those around you. We had a nice chat with the waitress and the man across from us about his recent travels to the Hershey Park in Pennsylvania. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming.
The food? Yum. Worth the drive and worth the wait. Sugar n’ Spice is known for their Wispy Thin Pancakes, but don’t be mistaken. Two pancakes will still fill you up quickly. Especially when ordered with a side of goetta which I also smothered in syrup. And the Fluffy Omelettes? Although we did not order those for this trip, they looked the same as I remembered. They are indeed huge and fluffy. And definitely on my radar for the next visit. The menu is large, does not disappoint and has all of your breakfast and lunch favorites and a few unique items as well – did I mention the goetta? Head to their website for a full list and more information.
The next time you are looking for a breakfast/brunch/lunch meal that is worthy of a long line of hungry customers at peak hours, head towards Sugar n’ Spice. You will not regret it.
