Fort Liberty Playland

Andy was gone all weekend and we needed something fun and different to occupy our Sunday morning.  So I surprised the kids by putting them right into the car when they got up and headed straight to Stan the Donut Man.  Each kid carefully picked out the perfect donut, grabbed a milk carton and got back into the car.  We went a bit further north (detoured at Starbucks) and ended up at Fort Liberty Playland.  Stella had been once before for a daycare summer camp field trip and has been begging to return.  And now I understand why.  This park is so cool for little ones!

There are lots of benches and picnic tables for families and groups.  And I really liked that the smaller kid area was completely fenced.  So your younger toddlers could be contained a bit more.

My kids played for HOURS.  Seriously, we were there for FOUR hours and I had to beg them to leave.  Sunday morning was not crowded at all.  A few families came and went.  My kids did a lot of imaginary play.  Below they were hard at work in a pirate and dragon story.

And if you missed my post on Facebook or Instagram I snuck up on these two to capture a sweet sister moment…only to discover that they were discussing BOOGERS.  Moment ruined.

The really cool thing is that there is a walking trail adjacent to the park.  I watched most families arrive via the trail.  This park is not exactly close to our neighborhood (about 20 minutes away) so I’m not sure how far or where the trail goes.  However, I did see a mom go for a quick run while dad and the kids played.  Great idea!

Overall, it’s a great park to check out if you need a new adventure!

Where is your favorite park?

  1. I realize this post is some 8 years old, but commenting for any new families looking for places to take their kids.

This is a wonderful park! This playground is actually just one stop along a long, skinny park that reaches east to Lesourdsville West Chester Road (called Wetlands Park East) with some ponds that get covered with big beautiful lilies in the spring. From there, a path leads west through some pleasant trees and grassy areas to a small, older playground at the Wetlands Park West (on the east side of Van Gorden Road). Then take the sidewalk across the bridge on Van Gorden and it connects to the Fort Liberty Playland, shown above with the picnic area and big wooden playground. Then follow the trail further west from there and the park ends with another pretty pond and a nice new playground called the Reserves Park which is a bit more friendly for younger kids than the big wooden Fort Liberty. There’s also a disc golf course in that Reserves Park area for those who enjoy that.

The whole park from end to end is about 1.5 miles long, so it’s a bit much for young kids to walk, but is very doable with a stroller, and is great if you have some older kids who want to walk a bit longer.

There are also 4 different parking lots: Wetlands Park East (on Lesourdsville West Chester Road), Wetlands Park West (access from Van Gorden Road), Fort Liberty Playland (access from Van Gorden, just north of the Wetlands Park West parking lot), and Reserves Park (access from Grandin Ridge Dr, the neighborhood off of Route 747), so there’s a lot of good access points depending on what you want to do.

Liberty Township and West Chester have a lot of great family friendly parks like this, it’s a wonderful place to raise a family.
