Cardboard Box Rocket Ships

I must admit I think we saw this idea on PBS kids after an episode of Curious George or Martha Speaks or something.  Kids were making rocket ships out of paper boxes with a bunch of fun craft supplies.  So my kids were all like, “MOM!  THAT LOOKS LIKE SO MUCH FUN!!!!”  And it was done.  The idea was etched into their little brains and every weekend after that they asked, “Can we make rocket ships????  Puh-lease?????”

What do you need to make cardboard box rocket ships of your own?

Most of the items are most likely already in your house!

  • Boxes – Big enough for the kids to at least stand in or sit in so that they can “take off” to space
  • Flat piece of cardboard for the “backdrop” – Definitely not necessary, but prolonged the activity for us
  • Nice weather – I highly suggest this be a driveway activity because the kids made a huge mess
  • Markers – We skipped the painting that they saw the kids doing on TV
  • Scrap paper
  • Glue and/or tape
  • Stickers
  • Googly eyes
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Leaves
  • Basically anything “crafty” that can be used as a decoration
