Many of you know that I watch Big Love. For those of you clueless of the show’s premise – it’s a drama about polygamy.
I can’t tell you how many actual conversations I’ve had with different moms that somehow end up with one of us saying, “If only I had a wife”. And it doesn’t matter if we work or stay home, if our husband is engaged in the chores, etc. There just aren’t enough hours in the day and having a “wife” seems like it would be helpful.
Hear me loud and clear: I don’t want a wife…I want an Alice.
Awhile ago I stayed in bed all day due to illness or just plain exhaustion. Anyway, it was just me, my bed, and the DVR – filled with more Oprah episodes. One of the episodes focused on the “new” TLC show Sister Wives. This “reality” show also focuses on polygamy.
One of the Oprah scenes flashed back to Oprah visiting another polygamist community and asking the women why they are ok with polygamy. One woman’s reply: “Makes you think of other people before yourself. If I didn’t live with other women, I would never learn about myself.” I have to agree with Oprah on this one…Uh, I don’t think so.
I consider motherhood CONSTANTLY thinking of others before yourself…whether it’s right or not. And I happen to learn A LOT about myself from being a daughter, sister, wife, mother, co-worker, etc. I don’t actually need another “wife” in the house for those reasons. And, seriously, the whole sharing-a-husband thing is just plain creepy to me.
That’s why I must clarify…I want a good old Alice. Someone who probably does similar things a Sister Wife would…but would stay away from my man!
Side note – anyone ordering from Alice? I still use “her” for a few small things every once in awhile, but not a majority of my things. Anyone getting groceries or other products mainly by mail?? Let us know if there’s a website and/or service you love.
