Whatcha Might Not Know…East vs. West…Yes, it Matters!

<Whatcha Might Not Know are Wednesday posts that are just that…something quick that you may or may not know about me, my family, my neighborhood, my city, my world, etc.>

Growing up in and around Cincinnati, there was something I learned early on…you were either from the West Side or the East Side.  Back in January, I even made mention of getting my passport out to go across town to visit relatives in my restaurant scissors post.

You will find quotes about it online: “There is a rivalry between the “East Side” and “West Side” of Cincinnati. Historically people from the West Side were blue collar workers, while those from the East Side were white collar workers.” (source)

And there are even forum discussions.  Many written by transplants confused as to where they live and why it matters.  My favorite post in one discussion was this: “And on the 8th day, God created North Cincinnati so all of the normal people would have somewhere to live.” (source)  But, I do live “north” and I’m not sure how normal I am.
People may not always ask what side you live on…however, it is apparently critical to know what high school you attended.  That question will come up no matter what, “Hi, nice to meet you.  What’s your name?  What high school did you attend?”  I think it’s a translation for “What side of town are you from??”
And when people move to the other side?  BLASPHEMY!  You may as well have moved across the country.  Because trekking from one side to the other is inconvenient – you know, due to the passport and all.
Here are a few great East/West cartoons I hope you enjoy!

  1. I remember the first time I was asked which school I attended…. And figured out that they meant HIGH SCHOOL! I wanted to be like …’how old are you?’ geese that was 15 years ago. I’ m not even sure who I was back then!! Cinci is a bit weird when it comes to that!
