For the Love of John Hughes

Andy and I love movies.  Love?  LOVE!  So tonight I convinced Andy to watch Easy A with me since we were caught up on our mutual DVR’d shows.  Miracle, I know.  Thanks summer programming dead zone!  It was either agree to Easy A or watch So You Think You Can Dance or The Bachelorette.  Not exactly a tough choice for him…but at first I think he was sorry that he had already watched today’s stage of the Tour de France during lunch, because that’s what’s been viewing at our house every evening.

Verdict on the movie?  Too cute.  In a John Tucker Must Die / Mean Girls / She’s All That kind of way.  But part of it made me a bit sad.  See, it’s a movie from last year about high schoolers, so I’m guessing Andy and I might not have been the targeted age group.  Problem?  The awesome reference to our favorite classics…the John Hughes 80s movies!

Movie quote from main character, Olive:
Whatever happened to chivalry? Does it only exist in 80’s movies? I want John Cusack holding a boombox outside my window. I wanna ride off on a lawnmower with Patrick Dempsey. I want Jake from Sixteen Candles waiting outside the church for me. I want Judd Nelson thrusting his fist into the air because he knows he got me. Just once I want my life to be like an 80’s movie, preferably one with a really awesome musical number for no apparent reason. But no, no, John Hughes did not direct my life.

Ok, so John Hughes did 3 of the 5…
I think my point (and the character’s point) is still made.

What’s your favorite 80s movie?

(Other than Bueller, all images from this blogger who apparently also liked Easy A.)

  1. We didn’t see many movies growing up, but I’ve seen most of the classics since. I’d have to go with Breakfast Club or Footloose (those were 80’s right?). And I loved Easy A–one of the few movies I’ve seen in the last few years.

  2. I agree with Kara’s choices but must add Goonies! I thought Easy A was entertaining but was happy that it was free on my DVR.

  3. I thought Easy A was cute. A total non-brainer which is what I wanted when we watched it. I love all the 80s movies! Favs are Breakfast club, and St. Elmos Fire. But gotta say – favortie scene is the one wtih John and the radio. “In Your Eyes” has been one of my favorite songs since I can remember!

  4. Loved Footloose the movie and the soundtrack.
Can’t Buy Me Love (I think I secretly wanted to be Cindy Mancini). Sixteen Candles (though there was no one who held a candle to Jake Ryan at my high school.). I agree with Meg on the greatness of In Your Eyes and the classic boom box scene.
