I am a Comment Whore…

While talking to an acquaintance about my new blog she opened up and told me that she was a comment whore.  I had never heard that terminology before.  I’m sure she thought I looked shocked, but I was just internalizing.  The realization hit me like a ton of bricks…OMG, I’m a whore too!  It was almost a relief – like finally being diagnosed with something that you knew you had, but weren’t sure what it was.

However, I must confess I wasn’t sure if this was a term the acquaintance made up (because she would!), but, no, it’s defined right here on Urban Dictionary.  I prefer definition 2, #2:  “One who constantly desires comments on their blog or guestbook.”  There is even merchandise you can purchase.  (I prefer the mousepad or mug over the t-shirt, thanks.)

And this is what is on our night stand in our guest room:

Yep…a guest book!

So, it’s out…I’m a comment whore.  I guess the first step is admittance.  I don’t mind the label, because I am not in denial.  See, I’m also an “assessment junkie”…meaning if there is a self-realization assessment offered to me…I jump at it.  I’ve done them all – DiSC, MBTI, StrengthsFinder, Harrison, etc.  And they all generally come down to 3 main points:

  1. I love interacting with people.  (Who, me?  The one who is constantly finding a reason to bring people together…girls nights, lunches, craft nights, etc.  No surprise there.)  And I particularly like helping others.  (Who, me?  The one with a career in educating others?  Again, no surprise.)
  2. It’s easy for me to put my thoughts into words, communicate with others, and connect with people.
  3. I need feedback.  (The feedback can disagree with me, but I need the engagement.)

Due to this, I’m one of those people that tends to comment on FB posts, blogs, etc.  I like dialogue and interaction!  But I also like a response.  And I am not alone.  There are many other whores out there.  In my search of the definition I found that this woman blogged about it as well.  So others also desire feedback.

The sad fact is that people rarely comment.  If you are reading this, stats show you are most likely a “lurker” or closet-reader.  (And I still TOTALLY appreciate you!)  I lurk around myself.

So, I know, it’s whore-able (that one’s for you kidd-o), but all I’m asking is for you to let me know you’re still with me every now and then…that I’m not alone on this journey.  Because just as I was wondering “Is this blog even worth doing?” the other day…I got both a “I love this blog” comment and a phone call from someone that found me online…and that made me keep on writing.  Because although this blog is a place for me to mind-dump…it’s also for you.  And if you quit coming…then what’s the point?  And if more of you keep coming…this could turn into something really cool – I may even make the site prettier.

(But by “really cool” I mean I could make some $$ and could stay at home in my pajamas all day blogging away, but then I’d miss the penis discussions in our break room and that would be no fun.  And, if in the end I did make money from this, all of you that comment this weekend would be considered my “early adopters” and who knows what I could have planned for you!)

And, btw, there is also a definition of comment vomit…don’t become that person…balance is healthy, people.

So…who’s even out there?  Anyone??  And if I don’t personally know you, how’d you find me?

  1. I love that you blog & don’t think liking feedback makes you a whore of any kind! I am all for FB and blogs…connecting with the outside world even if you are stuck at home:). LPR

  2. My question is…
Did you develop this problem before or after you became a trainer? LOL

Think about it, as soon as the last person leaves the room, what do we do? Read our evaluations!!!!

Tricia, actually think folks like you and me really love knowing something we say or do is making a difference in this crazy world. All it takes is one or two people to say, “that really helped me” and we can keep on teaching and keep on writing!

BTW, I read every post and it really helps me to understand the things my daughter’s face these days!

    Thanks for sharing!

    Dianne

  3. I’m visiting your blog because Nutmeg recommended it on Facebook. I just started blogging and I’m a comment whore too so I thought I’d let you know that I enjoy your blog.

  4. I think all bloggers (myself included) are comment whores. When I started blogging, I was just writing for me, but it has turned into such a gift to stay connected with friends and, even better, to make new ones through the blogosphere.

I enjoyed catching up on some of your posts tonight!

I’m LPR’s sister, by the way.

  5. “June Bear” – Did you just start blogging? I will have to check out your blog a bit more…quick check last night. mep – I’m going to have to look into you as well. Thanks for visiting…I think your sister is just so sweet.
